Green Land & Cattle Co.

Green Land & Cattle Company
Albany, Texas
Founded: 1892
WHC Contestant since 1985

In the 1870s, Thomas Henry Green, a Confederate veteran from Hill County, Texas, was running horses on the open range. Later, when the open range was being fenced, a herd of his horses was running in Shackelford County on Hubbard Creek. He sent his son, William Henry, a recent 1885 graduate of Trinity University, up the Texas Central Railroad to Albany on a mission to gather and sell the horses. The younger Green did everything as instructed but did not return home to Hill County. He was so impressed with the Hubbard Creek range that he used the proceeds from the horse sales to lease and later purchase the beginnings of the Green Ranches.

Over the years, Green acquired additional ranch land and expanded his cattle operation. Early on, when he acquired a herd of cows that were branded with a “J” on the left hip, he adopted the brand as his own.

Today, William Henry Green’s heirs (currently the third, fourth, and fifth generations) operate ranches in Shackelford, Stephens, Oldham, Archer, and Wichita counties. In addition to running Angus-bred cows and stocker cattle, the Greens maintain an award-winning horse program and have participated in the WHC Ranch Horse Sale since its inception.

The Green Land & Cattle Team took home 5th place honors along with splitting a three way tie for Friday Night's Ranch Bronc Title in 2025.
